Sophie Winkleman on why she is supporting the SafeScreens petition to pause and review EdTech

Our children are being used as test subjects for unproven classroom technology.

In this video, Sophie Winkleman explains why she is supporting the SafeScreens petition calling on the government to pause pupil-facing EdTech until it is independently audited and proven to be safe and educationally beneficial.

Right now, the evidence points in the opposite direction.

Excessive screen use in schools is linked to:
• poorer academic outcomes
• eye strain, headaches, poor posture and sleep disruption
• reduced handwriting, reading and sustained focus
• increased safeguarding, privacy and data risks

Children do not learn best from constant screen exposure, AI shortcuts, or staring at devices instead of their teachers.

They learn through books, handwriting, discussion, attention, and human connection.

This petition is not calling for a ban on technology.
It is calling for something far more reasonable.

👉 Pause pupil-facing EdTech
👉 Review the evidence independently
👉 Protect children’s wellbeing and learning

At 10,000 signatures, the government must respond.
At 100,000 signatures, this will be considered for debate in Parliament.

If you are a parent who feels something isn’t right, trust that instinct.
